It is not ideal to have an alligator in the pond out back. However, it is ideal to have Cortec’s Cooling Loop Gator® present in cooling water systems during seasonal shutdown. That is because the Cooling Loop Gator® does what no other traditional water treatment can do: it offers effective corrosion protection while the system is offline. Instead of loading the cooling water with extra polymer or phosphate inhibitors just before shutdown and hoping the protection will carry over even when the water is no longer circulating, water treatment service providers can have peace of mind that their customers’ systems are protected with the Cooling Loop Gator®.
Effective Corrosion Protection
Cortec’s Cooling Loop Gator® is a Vapor phase Corrosion Inhibitor (VpCI®) powder packaged in polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) water-soluble bags. Developed for seasonal, short-term, or long-term layup, Cooling Loop Gator® protects enclosed spaces for up to 12 months. Once the bag and powder dissolve, the Vapor phase Corrosion Inhibitors adsorb on all metal surfaces, reaching recessed areas and interior cavities. The VpCI® inhibitors form a strong molecular layer on the metal and protect in both the liquid and vapor phase. This makes it possible to protect inaccessible and recessed surfaces, as well as those in direct contact with the cooling water, for the most thorough protection. The Cooling Loop Gator® protects multiple metal types, including galvanized steel, copper, and brass.
Easy Application & Return to Service
The Cooling Loop Gator® makes layup and return to service extremely easy. The water-soluble bags are safe and easy to handle, non-hazardous, and nonirritating. All workers have to do is toss the Cooling Loop Gator® pouches into the tower basin water, circulate it for 12-24 hours to leave behind a good corrosion inhibiting film, and drain—or partially drain—the water (wet-dry layup) or leave it inside (wet layup) as desired. All valves and openings should be covered or closed to prevent the escape of Vapor phase Corrosion Inhibitors and ensure maximum protection. The Cooling Loop Gator® does not need to be flushed out before bringing the cooling water system back online. The Gator further makes return to service easy by drastically cutting down the labor needed to deal with problems that would normally come from clogging or fouling with chip scale or other corrosion products.
Compatibility and Disposal
Cooling Loop Gators are compatible with most materials of construction in cooling towers (e.g., rubbers, polymers, etc.) and are effective in the presence of non-oxidizing biocides and oxidizing biocides.* Cooling Loop Gator® also has a friendlier profile for disposal than some common water
treatment chemicals. It is nitrite-, phosphate-, and chromate-free. It is also available in a molybdate-free (MF) version (no tracer) for use in regions with tightening molybdate restrictions.
Don’t Settle for Second Best!
It is easy to think traditional corrosion inhibitors are the only option for cooling water layup. The Cooling Loop Gator® proves otherwise, with an easy and effective answer to mitigate corrosion in offline systems.
