With the greater part of winter still ahead in the Northern Hemisphere, now may not seem like the right time to think about getting comfort cooling systems into gear at hospitals and other large facilities. However, it is still important to be prepared for the occasional warm spell that could kick associated cooling towers and closed loop systems into action. With that in mind, Cortec® suggests being ready with the Cooling Loop Croc™ as a great emergency stopgap for corrosion protection during warm spells.

The Challenge of Winter Warm Spells

From time to time, winter warm spells brighten the winter or give hopes of an early spring, allowing residents of northern climates to peel off winter clothing layers and soak in some sun for a few days before going back into refrigeration mode. Sometimes, temperatures climb so high that it requires hospitals, universities, and large office building complexes to turn on their comfort cooling systems temporarily. The problem is that the systems may have to be quickly turned off again, making it impractical to put the normal chemical water treatment operating programs into place. At the same time, the sudden surge of highly oxygenated makeup water into the cooling tower or closed loop system can raise the risk of oxygen pitting, eventually leading to more serious problems such as leakage and shortened service life. In addition, winterized chemical pumps and controllers may not be placed back into service for this short period of operation. Even if the normal chemical treatment program could be started, it usually takes much longer to reach regular operating conditions than a few days of warm spell operation would allow. This combination of factors can lead to uncontrolled corrosion in the cooling water system.

Emergency Corrosion Protection

The Cooling Loop Croc™ provides two benefits that relieve the tension of these uncertainties by providing an emergency corrosion inhibiting stopgap during temporary startup. First, the Cooling Loop Croc™ packs a powerful blend of corrosion inhibitors in a water-soluble package, eliminating direct handling of chemicals. Second, the organic dispersant component will work to loosen and remove any biofilm that may have accumulated in the system, thus improving overall efficiency and corrosion protection. The Croc is easy to apply simply by removing the water-soluble pouch from its outer barrier bag and placing the product in a turbulent area of the cooling tower basin after partially or completely filling the system with water and turning on the circulating pumps. The Croc dissolves and releases a combination of contact and Vapor phase Corrosion Inhibitors that offer protection to metal surfaces in direct contact with the treated water and also diffuse to surfaces in the void space above the water level. The Cooling Loop Croc™ protects multiple metal types, including galvanized steel and yellow metals. It is made from more than 80% biodegradable materials and does not contain nitrite, phosphate, or chromate. After the warm spell, Croc users can contact Cortec® for further assistance to determine whether reapplication of a Cortec® layup system (such as the companion Cooling Loop Gator®) is needed or not.
